Often COPD is regarded as a “smoker’s disease”, with most of the population believing that those with COPD knowingly engaged in risky behavior that resulted in their illness. It’s not just the general population that holds this belief, it is often physicians as well. It’s this problem that led to our next Share Your Story participant, Carol Anderson, to have undiagnosed COPD for more than a decade even after visiting 15 to 20 different doctors.
Welcome back to Share Your COPD Story :)
Today you will be hearing the story of Patrick Wolohan, who's faced an uphill battle with his health since he was born with Pulmonary Hypertension and a congenital heart defect.
Despite the odds he has faced, Patrick doesn't allow his declining health to control his life. Instead, he turns to meditation, self improvement workshops, friends, family, and God to help him accept his unfortunate circumstances and make peace with himself, both mentally and emotionally.
In the words of Patrick "Embracing and loving yourself may seem really hard and it was for me. It's really about making peace with what you have. I know people who have a much harder go in life than myself."
It's now time for Patrick to take over..
Today we are excited to share Anne Berry's story with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, better known as COPD.
Anne wasn't one to site back and let life pass her by. Instead, she was frequently at the gym lifting weights or enjoying a nice walk on days she wasn't at the gym. Anne was still able to make fitness a priority despite having a full time job at the post office.
She even pursued her dream of attending film school in LA. But unfortunately, due to her decision to smoke cigarettes she was diagnosed with COPD 10 years ago.
I'll now pass it over to Anne to share the rest of her story with COPD.
Aubrey Cohen enjoyed life to it's fullest extent, she was outgoing and constantly active. However, like many of you she was delivered the unfortunate news that she has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
But that doesn't hold Aubrey back. Through regular exercise training and eating a healthy diet, Aubrey "practically has no extreme problem with breathing".
When you hear about COPD, do you first think of a young or older aged patient? Most commonly, COPD impacts people 40 years or older. However that's not to say that younger people are not affected, it's just the vast majority of patients are over 40.
In today's share your COPD story, you will hear from Kim Lam a 30 year old patient with COPD. We are excited to bring you her story so you can hear how a younger patient copes with her disease, and the steps she takes to ensure a healthy and happy life with COPD.
Now that you are introduced to Kim, it's time for her to share her COPD story with you!
